Using high-quality welding wires is an important part of being a welder. That’s why it’s not always easy to find the right welding wire for your project and the right applications. In this blog, we’ll show you why the Böhler QG series, such as the Böhler QG 3 and Böhler QG 4, is an excellent choice for your MAG welding job in structural steel construction, pressure vessels, and shipbuilding.

What are the Böhler QG 3 and Böhler QG 4 welding wires?

The Böhler QG 3 and Böhler QG 4 series are solid welding wires that you can use for unalloyed and low-alloyed steel. The QG 3 is the successor to SG2 welding wire . The QG 4 is the successor to SG3 welding wire . Both welding wires are MAG welding wire , which are extremely suitable for applications in structural steel construction, pressure vessels and shipbuilding. Both series are part of the QLine from Böhler Welding. This product group contains Böhler welding wires that are very suitable for standard welding work at a very competitive price.

The advantages of böhler QG welding wire

The Böhler Welding QLine welding wires , including the QG 3 and QG 4, are quality products that meet the most common approvals. It is not without reason that the 'Q' in the name stands for quality. In addition, these welding wires offer you a low spatter level, which ensures clean and efficient welding. The Böhler QG 3 and Böhler QG 4 also have a smooth arc stability, which maintains a stable arc under changing conditions.

What is the difference between the Böhler QG 3 and QG 4 welding wires?

Both welding wires are virtually the same, only there is a difference in tensile strength. The Böhler QG 3 has a tensile strength of up to 420 MPa, while the QG 4 can handle a little more: 460 MPa.

The different versions of Böhler QG 3 welding wire

At Lastechniek Rijnmond we have different versions of the Q G-series. To give you an idea of what the different versions entail, we have listed them.

Böhler QG 308L-Si

This is a solid welding wire for joining and surface applications. You can use this wire with matching and comparable austenitic (cast) steels. This type of welding wire has good corrosion resistance and a high weld metal toughness down to -106ºC. The processing temperature is maximum 350ºC.

Böhler QG 309L-Si

The 309L variant is also a solid welding wire, especially for joining unalloyed and low-alloyed steel. This type of welding wire is very suitable for applying intermediate layers when welding coated materials. In addition, it has a favourable high Cr and Ni content and a low C content. The processing temperature is a maximum of 300ºC.

BÖHLER QG 316L-SI

This welding wire is designed for joining surfaces of matching and comparable austenitic steels. It has good corrosion resistance with a maximum service temperature of 400ºC.

Certifications of Böhler QG 3 and Böhler QG 4 welding wire

Both versions have various certifications that guarantee the quality of the welding wire. Both welding wires have the EN ISO 14341-A quality mark. In addition, the Böhler QG 3 has the G 42 3 M21 3Si1 / G 38 2 C1 3Si1 quality marks and the QG 4 has the G 46 4 M21 4Si1 / G 46 2 C1 4Si1 quality marks.
